For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with [their] ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with [their] eyes, hear with [their] ears, understand with [their] hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’
When anyone hears the message of the kingdom but {does} not understand [it], the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the [seed] sown along the path.
[Jesus] looked around at them with anger [and] sorrow at [their] hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand. So he stretched [it] out, and [it] was restored.
Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with [their] lips, but their hearts are far from Me.
Aware of [their conversation], [Jesus] asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts?
“Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that [it] will happen, it will be done for him.
and to love Him with all [your] heart and with all [your] understanding and with all [your] strength, and to love [your] neighbor as yourself. This is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
And he will go on before [the Lord] in [the] spirit and power of Elijah, to turn [the] hearts of [the] fathers to [their] children and [the] disobedient to [the] wisdom of [the] righteous — to make ready a people prepared for [the] Lord.
The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil [man] brings evil [things] out of the evil [treasure of his heart]. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
The [ seeds ] along the path are those who hear, [but] the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe [and] be saved.
He answered, “‘Love [the] Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘[Love] your neighbor as yourself.’
But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming, and he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk.
So He said to them, “You are the [ones who] justify [yourselves] before men, but God knows your hearts. For what [is] prized among men [is] detestable before God.
But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and [the] worries of life — and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare.
“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with [their] eyes, and understand with [their] hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.”
With one accord they continued [to meet] daily in the temple [courts] and to break bread from house [to house], sharing [their] meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,
Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it [not] at [your] disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!
[After] removing [Saul], He raised up David as their king and testified [about him]: ‘I have found David [son] of Jesse a man after My [own] heart; [he] will carry out My will in its entirety.’
Yet He has not left Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.
Among those listening [was] a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple [cloth] from [the] city of Thyatira, [who was] a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.
Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with [their] ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with [their] eyes, hear with [their] ears, understand with [their] hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’
For although they knew God, they neither glorified [Him] as God [nor] gave thanks [to Him], but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.
But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for [the] day of wrath, [when] God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
[So] they show [that] the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, [and] their thoughts either accusing or defending [them]
No, a man [is] a Jew [ because he is one ] inwardly, and circumcision [is a matter] of the heart, by [the] Spirit, not by the written code. [Such a man’s] praise [does] not [come] from men, but from God.
Therefore judge nothing before [the] appointed time; [wait] until the Lord comes. [He] will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of [ men’s ] hearts. At that time each will receive [his] praise from God.
But the [man who] [is] firmly established in his heart [and] under no constraint, with control over [his] will and resolve in [his] heart [not to marry] the virgin, he will do well.
It is clear that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry written not with ink but with [the] Spirit of [the] living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
For God, who said, “{Let} light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us [the] light of the knowledge of the glory of God in [the] face of Jesus Christ.
We are not commending ourselves to you again. Instead, we are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you can answer those who take pride in appearances [rather than] in [the] heart.
[I ask that] the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know the hope of His calling, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints,
They are darkened in [their] understanding [and] alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in [my] heart. [For] in my chains and in [my] defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.
that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and filled with [the] full riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, [namely] Christ,
{Let} the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, [and] as you sing psalms, hymns, [and] spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Slaves, obey [your] earthly masters in everything, not [only] to please them while they are watching, but with sincerity of heart [and] fear of the Lord.
Brothers, although we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in heart), [our] desire to see you face [to face] was even more intense.
so that He may establish your hearts in blamelessness [and] holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.Amen.
[God] again designated a certain day [as] “Today, when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, {do} not harden your hearts.”
For the word of God [is] living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges [the] thoughts and intentions of [the] heart.
For this [is] the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares [the] Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.
“This [is] the covenant I will make with them after those days, declares [the] Lord. I will put My laws in their hearts and inscribe them on their minds.”
let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, {having} our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and [our] bodies washed with pure water.
{Do} not be carried away [by] all kinds [of] strange teachings, for [it is] good for the heart to be strengthened by grace [and] not by foods of no value to those devoted to [them].
[Since] you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers love one another deeply, from a pureheart.
But in your hearts sanctify Christ [as] Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope [that is] in you. But [respond] with gentleness and respect,
We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. [And] you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in [a] dark place, until [the] day dawns and [the] morning star rises in your hearts.
[Their] eyes are full of adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied they seduce [the] unstable [They are] accursed children with hearts trained in greed.
Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the [One who] searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her the same measure of torment and grief. In her heart she says ‘I sit [as] queen; I am not a widow and {will} never see grief.
