I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me will come [One] more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with [the] HolySpirit and with fire.
Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And {do} not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham [as our] father. For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
I tell you that in the same way there will be [more] joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.
[When] they heard [this], they had no further [objections], and they glorified God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.
First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone in the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy [of their] repentance.
[yet] now I rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you felt the sorrow that God had intended and so were not harmed in [any way] by us.
Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ [and] go on to maturity, not laying again [the] foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,
and then have fallen away — to be restored to repentance, because they themselves are crucifying the Son of God {all over again} and subjecting [Him] to open shame.
For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for repentance, though he sought [the blessing] with tears.
The Lord is not slow [in keeping] [His] promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
